Which insect screen for which opening
The right model depends less on the price than on how you use the window or door.
The fixed frame
A rigid frame that fits into the opening for the season and comes out in winter. The simplest option, for a window you open but never walk through.
The roll-up screen
The mesh rolls up into a small box at the top of the window. You pull it down in the evening and back up in the morning, and it stays in place all year round.
The pleated screen
It folds away to the side like an accordion, with a very low threshold you step over without thinking. The natural choice for a French door onto the garden.
Before you choose
Three questions to ask yourself
- Do you need to walk through it? For a French door, yes, so a pleated or sliding screen. For a bedroom window, no, and a fixed frame or a roll-up screen will do.
- Is there a roller shutter? The insect screen has to fit in without getting in the way of the shutter coming down.
- How does the window open? If it opens inwards or is tilt-and-turn, the insect screen goes on the outside of the opening sash so that it does not block it.

What you need to know
Insect screen mesh filters out some of the light. Fine mesh is barely noticeable, especially from inside, but the room looks a touch darker on grey days.
A soft brush or a little soapy water is all it takes to look after it. Roll-up and pleated models are best handled gently: it is the mechanism, not the mesh, that wears first.
